Government in talks with the Netherlands to develop flower market | Gurgaon News

Gurgaon: In a year and a half, Gurgaon will have the largest flower market in NCR, according to government sources. The state government is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with the Netherlands in this regard.
Spread over ten acres, the flower market will be jointly developed by the Haryana Marketing Board and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority.
About 11 acres of land have recently been awarded for the project in Sector 52, Wazirabad. Of this number, only ten acres will be used for the flower market.
Haryana State Agriculture Minister OP Dhankar told TOI that the flower market will have international facilities. “We are at an advanced stage of talks with the Netherlands regarding the project. Their agriculture minister visited us and we also visited their country,” Dhankar said.
He added that the inspiration would be drawn from Royal Flora in the Netherlands – the largest flower conglomerate in the world with multiple auctions and flower markets. It is estimated that Royal Flora sells around 20 million flowers on a daily basis and most of the Dutch flower trade goes through the same.
The market will provide a platform for local farmers to showcase and sell their flowers. The total cost of the project is around Rs 50 crore and it will be ready within a year and a half, according to the minister.
The market will have space for exhibition, auction and sale of flowers. There will be closed stores with display, sorting, storage and cooling areas. There will also be open stands and platforms. Sellers can opt for any facility as per their convenience.
In addition, there will be an exhibition area where flower shows and seminars will be held. A senior Haryana Marketing Board official said that apart from infrastructure, special emphasis will be placed on technology. “We will use technology to track the stock of flowers at each vendor and the purchases made by customers. This will help us understand demand and supply patterns,” the official said.
Although there is an array of local flower species, several imported flowers will also be on sale. Officials said the market’s proximity to the airport would benefit vendors.
