A clash has erupted between a local BNP Rajbari faction and their student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, over standing in the front row to lay wreaths marking International Mother Language Day on Monday.
The incident was reported around 8am by a local Shaheed Minar adjacent to Goalanda upazila’s “Shaheed Muktijoddha Fakir Mohiuddin Ansar Club”.
Witnesses say the BNP Goalanda upazila led by President Sultan Nur Islam Munnu Mollah and Chhatra Dal came together to the monument to pay their respects.
However, Rezaul Hasan Mithu, former vice-president of Chhatra Dal, and Idris Sheikh, a member of the BNP faction, argued over which group should stand in the front row to lay wreaths. The argument then erupted into a confrontation.
“The clash between Mithu and Idris was a misunderstanding. This is not an internal dispute,” BNP faction chairman Sultan Nur Islam Munnu Mollah said.
Chairman of another BNP faction, Nizam Uddin Sheikh, said, “We are the only BNP-announced committee in the district. The other group tarnishes the image of the party by creating chaos.
Goalanda Ghat Police Station OC Swapan Kumar Majumder said police brought the situation under control as soon as the clashes broke out.
