Agriculture Minister Virender Kanwar said today that a flower market would be opened in Una. It will be the second such market in the state after Parwanoo. He was speaking at a ‘Kisan Sammelan’ held in Takka village of Kutlehar Assembly segment.
Kanwar said farmers in Una district are growing flowers on a large scale but are facing difficulties in marketing the produce. He said a new vegetable and fruit market is being built in Rampur village near Una town and tenders amounting to Rs 2.5 crore were awarded for the work. He said additional land is being purchased alongside the existing vegetable market plot for its expansion.
Kanwar, who also holds the portfolio of livestock minister, said a buffalo breeding center to produce ‘Murrah’ breed is being set up in Dangehra village. A zonal veterinary hospital is in the final stages of completion in the village of Barnoh and a center of excellence in dairy farming has been sanctioned in the village of Basal. He added that a team of experts from Denmark would arrive in Una next month to provide technical expertise on the dairy project.
The minister said that the Rs 1,010 crore second phase of the JICA-assisted crop diversification project has been launched. It will be implemented in all districts of the state.
He informed that the state government has promoted the planting of asafoetida in Kullu and Mandi districts in addition to saffron in Lahaul and Spiti.
In Una, Hamirpur and Bilaspur districts, cinnamon cultivation has been promoted to increase farm income, Kanwar said, adding that an MoU will soon be signed with IHBT Palampur to supply 40,000 cinnamon plants. each year to the department for distribution to farmers.
Officers from the Department of Agriculture talked about new techniques and interventions in farming practices.
